This position and its start and end dates are dependent on funding.

The KBVR-FM Music Director is responsible for curating, organizing, reviewing and ingesting new music for KBVR-FM. This includes working with labels and promoters to find new music, charting music plays, and working with volunteers to review all new music prior to being played on KBVR-FM.

The Music Director ensures student staff members and volunteers are held to the highest ethical and professional standards and practices. The Music Director builds others up through mentoring, coaching and supporting, while also managing and directing work.

The Music Director follows OMN policies and procedures to recruit, lead and supervise student staff and volunteers while advancing Orange Media Network’s reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization.

 

Pay Rate: 15 hours per week, at $765 per month

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Is knowledgeable in live on-air radio operations, including Wide Orbit and Wheatstone equipment in DJ booth
  • Is knowledgeable of how to create content for FM productions and is interested in learning to create content for all media platforms.
  • Is knowledgeable of FCC rules and requirements

  • Is knowledgeable of Spotify, Soundcloud, and other online streaming services

  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Due to ongoing COVID-19 response needs, some responsibilities in this position description may need to be adjusted to comply with evolving health and safety expectations that are unknown at the time of this posting. Examples may include: studio and other facility use, social distancing requirements, and the need to conduct work remotely or on-site. The successful applicant will be adaptable to this changing environment.

 

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Has been a paid staff member or volunteer for KBVR-FM for at least one term.
  • Prior attendance and participation in OMN Boot Camp
  • Previous radio or audio production experience

 

Responsibilities:

  • KBVR-FM Music Director Responsibilities
    • Coordinate the reception of newly received music to KBVR-FM and supervise the reviewing of music on a weekly basis
    • Connect with record and promotion label promoters on a weekly basis via email or phone
    • Connect with local artists and update Local Music rotator regularly
    • Review music and assign reviews to contributors
    • Gain proficiency in reviewing weekly station charts through Spinitron
    • Report to NACC (North American College and Community Chart) weekly with top charts and adds, as well as specialty charts when possible
    • Maintain and organize the record shelves in the DJ Booth and record archive.
    •  Add newly reviewed music to automation and rotators
    • Work with the Station Manager and Asst. Station Manager to maintain contact with venues and promoters locally to acquire tickets and other merchandise for on-air giveaways
    • Manage and contribute to the music blog Cassette, under direction from the KBVR-FM Station Manager
      • Work with FM Station Manager and Barometer Editor-in-Chief to ensure that the Cassette Blog is updated at least once per week
      • Review playlist submissions from DJs for the blog
      • With Assistant Station Manager, encourage blog submissions from DJs, review submissions and make edits prior to publication
      • At least one article per term should be about a local concert, two articles should be related to a curated music playlist and two articles should be album reviews. The remaining articles are up to the decision of the music director
      • Work with Barometer Editorial to copy edit articles by request for publication of the Barometer or Gazette-Times
      • Coordinate with Daily Barometer editor to ensure blog posts are posted online and/or printed in the newspaper as requested
      • Work with DJs and staff to get media passes to shows to provide coverage for Cassette - interviews, photos, social media posts
      • Recruit, train and assign DJs and other FM staff to review new music and contribute to Cassette
    • Be proficient in the Wide Orbit music scheduling software and Wheatstone equipment in the DJ booth
    • Keep the digital music library in Wide Orbit up-to-date and organized - work with the productions director to share new music to be added to the rotators
    • Participate in training new DJs as assigned by station manager
    • Post to KBVR-FM social media at least once per week by working with assistant station manager to find relevant content, including concerts, DJ highlights, show promos, album reviews
    • Grow audience engagement
    • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
    • Ensure that you and your staff complete all OMN surveys
    • Check and respond to BaseCamp for project management
    • Act in a professional manner at all times and create and maintain collegial working relationships with fellow student leaders and organization members
    • Attend weekly cohort meeting
    • Other duties as assigned by the adviser and Director
  • Communication
    • Respond to emails, pings and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
  • Collaboration
    • Hold and post 15 regular office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
    • Ensure KBVR-FM fully participates in all OMN events, including OMN Open House, Housing Fair and Launch parties
    • Attend the OMN Student Fee Committee presentations
    • Work with marketing team to develop and implement marketing strategies for KBVR-FM and OMN
    • Meet weekly with marketing to review social media posts, strategize, and plan, to increase social media engagement
  • Leadership
    • Be an approachable leader within the OMN organization, capable of seeing things from the 5,000-foot level and representing the entire organization as needed
    • Hold staff accountable to their position descriptions and expectations, and publicly acknowledge and celebrate accomplishment and growth at all levels of the organization

    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to grow and try new roles, positions and leadership opportunities. Collaborate with adviser on new ways for staff to advance in their skills
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the KBVR-FM staff
    • Attendance must be reliable and punctual
  • Hiring and payroll
    • Hire staff in consultation with adviser. Disciplinary action must be approved by adviser, based on University Human Resources guidelines and following OMN’s 3-strike process
    • Follow hiring process and immediately report all new hires and volunteers to the Assistant to the Director for Operations Support so that they can complete payroll forms and obtain card access
    • Confirm with professional staff that all new team members have completed onboarding process and required trainings prior to assigning work
  • Delegate
    • Responsible for all duties delegated to staff in their position descriptions
  • Policies and Procedures
    • Follow all OMN policies and procedures and hold all staff and volunteers to all OMN policies and procedures
    • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities and equipment
    • Be good stewards of OMN resources by ensuring that OMN equipment is only used for OMN work
    • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment
    • Proactively collaborate with adviser on anticipating and resolving issues with student staff, productions, participants, guests, readers, listeners, and viewers
