This position and its start and end dates are dependent on funding.

 

The cartoonist creates cartoons as assigned for The Daily Barometer, Beaver’s Digest, DAMchic, Prism and other OMN mediums as assigned by the student leader of the respective medium.

The cartoonist follows OMN policies and procedures while advancing Orange Media Network’s reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization.

 

Pay Rate: $36 per assignment

Cartoonists are paid more per assignment under the following promotion schedule:

$44.25/assignment for Cartoonist II

$50.25/assignment for Cartoonist III

 

Qualifications:

  • Is knowledgeable of and able to follow the SPJ Code of Ethics

  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Due to ongoing COVID-19 response needs, some responsibilities in this position description may need to be adjusted to comply with evolving health and safety expectations that are unknown at the time of this posting. Examples may include: studio and other facility use, social distancing requirements, and the need to conduct work remotely or on-site. The successful applicant will be adaptable to this changing environment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Cartoonist Responsibilities
    • Pitches and delivers cartoon ideas that have news values and engagement for the OSU community at least every other week.
    • Takes editorial cartoon assignments to provide images to accompany print and online content for all OMN mediums as assigned
    • Produces accurate and impartial cartoons that fairly represent the story and the people involved.
    • Meets all deadlines
    • Meets editors’ standards for clarity, neatness, quality of writing and detail and other specifications
    • Produces cartoons in both color and black and white that are either created digitally and submitted as a .jpeg or .png or are drawn, scanned, uploaded and submitted as a .jpeg or .png. Dimensions will be 3000x1500 pixels at 300 dpi OR 2000x4000 pixels at 400 dpi OR 5x10 inches unless otherwise assigned
    • Incorporates feedback before deadline
    • Communicates any errors and corrections to designated editor
    • Attends all staff meetings as required by editor-in-chief and designated editor
    • Ensures use, checking and responding to BaseCamp and checking cartoonist rotation spreadsheet for project management and deadlines
    • Works with mentor cartoonist during their first term in the position at minimum
    • Acts in a professional manner at all times and creates and maintains collegial working relationships with fellow student leaders, organization members, sources, stakeholders, partners, collaborators and the community
  • Communication
    • Respond to emails and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur.
