The Prism Editor-in-Chief is responsible for student-produced content for the print journal, its website and all social media platforms.

The editor ensures student staff members are held to the highest ethical, fiscal and professional standards and practices. The editor acts as a liaison of the journal and OMN and may be called upon to serve on committees and represent OMN publicly.

As a student leader, the editor works to create an inclusive culture of celebration and perseverance at OMN. They think only the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best. They will work to leave a legacy of accomplishment through an unwavering committment to reflection, growth and serving the OSU Community.

The Prism Editor-in-Chief employment dates are as follows:

  • Onboarding:
    • On-boarding to occur remotely. Link to all modules to be sent to you by your adviser on September 1, 2020.
  • Full Start:
    • TBD

 

Pay Rate:  20 hours per week, $1,060 per month

 

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of AP style
  • Familiar with the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Able to create content for online and print platforms
  • Knowledgeable in the process of creating a literary and arts journal
  • Able to use InDesign
  • Capable of effectively using Google tools and social media analytics for building audience engagement
  • Has a strong social media presence and recognizes the role of social media in soliciting work from a broad range of contributors
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff or an a volunteer OMN staff for at least 6 months.
  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Must complete all elements of the On-Boarding Curriculum before beginning role
  • Due to ongoing COVID-19 response needs, some responsibilities in this position description may need to be adjusted to comply with evolving health and safety expectations that are unknown at the time of this posting. Examples may include: studio and other facility use, social distancing requirements, and the need to conduct work remotely on on-site. The successful applicant will be adaptable to this changing environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Prism Editor-in-Chief Responsibilities
    • Supervise the creation of a single print edition of Prism art and literary journal to publish by week 7 of Spring Term. The print edition will be at least 100 pages and consist of the highest quality pieces submitted by OSU students.
    • Ensure all pieces are solicited and received by week 9 of fall term. Ensure production and design of print edition is completed and issue published by week 7 of spring term.
    • Establish a review committee made up of interested volunteers and guide committee in review process
    • Ensure that staff and review committee volunteers are well-versed in the best practices of critiquing art and literature, and maintain professional environment when evaluating submissions
    • Supervise and ensure the the creation of a weekly art/literary podcast to be posted on the Prism website. The creation of the podcast can be delegated to volunteers.
    • Supervise and ensure the creation of a twice-monthly Prism web video, which could include artist profiles, poetry readings, fiction readings, artist interviews, how-two videos, or other art-and-literature related topics. The creation of the videos can be delegated to assistant editor or volunteers.
    • Update Prism website and/or blog at least five days a week with stories, photos and interactive features.
    • Update Prism social media platforms at least once a day with relevant content from the OSU campus and beyond to engage readers
    • Organize and conduct three public events (fall, winter, spring), one of which will be a launch party to conincide with the print edition publication. The other events could include but are not limited to Art Showcases, Open Mics, Art Contests, group art sessions, etc.
    • Plan and hold weekly meetings, assign tasks and oversee production activities of the journal
    • Ensure that all articles have been copyedited and that all names, places, etc. are correct before publication is sent to a commercial printer. Printer proofs are strictly for image quality purposes and not for checking details or proofreading.
    • Check all submissions for plagiarism prior to publishing
    • Ensure that all print files are sent by established printer deadline
    • Grow audience engagement
    • Fully participate in weekly OMN Student Leadership meetings with the Director
    • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
    • Ensure that you and your staff complete all OMN surveys
    • Check and respond to BaseCamp for project management
    • Act in a professional manner at all times and create and maintain collegial working relationships with fellow student leaders and organization members
    • Other duties as assigned by the adviser and Director
  • Communication
    • Meet regularly with OMN adviser to go over feedback and areas for improvement; anticipate and strategize for overcoming challenges
    • Respond to emails, pings and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
    • Work with adviser to maintain and create documentation for OMN programs, including training material, handbooks, manuals, production planning, and staff lists
    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
    • Report monthly to the OMN Advisory Board, providing updates, analysis and insightful information on engagement, listeners, staffing, strategies and accolades
  • Collaboration
    • Hold and post 15 regular office hours each week at Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
    • Schedule, create an agenda and hold weekly cohort meetings before 6 p.m. with Prism staff and adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, plan and execute activities for the upcoming week, month and term
    • Ensure Prism fully participates in all OMN events, including OMN Open House, Housing Fair and Launch parties
    • Attend the OMN Student Fee Committee presentations
    • Help create or provide content for the OMN page in the Gazette-Times, coordinating with the Barometer Editor and professional staff on dates and deadlines
    • Assist with planning OMN Boot Camp workshops and activities
  • Leadership
    • Be an approachable leader within the OMN organization, capable of seeing things from the 5,000-foot level and representing the entire organization as needed
    • Hold staff accountable to their position descriptions and expectations, and publicly acknowledge and celebrate accomplishment and growth at all levels of the organization
    • Be an enthusiastic leader and representative of OMN
    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to grow and try new roles, positions and leadership opportunities. Collaborate with adviser on new ways for staff to advance in their skills
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the Prismstaff
    • Attendance must be reliable and punctual
  • Hiring and payroll
    • Hire staff in consultation with adviser. Disciplinary action must be approved by adviser, based on University Human Resources guidelines and following OMN’s 3-strike process
    • Follow hiring process and immediately report all new hires and volunteers to the Assistant to the Director for Operations Support so that they can complete payroll forms and obtain card access
    • Confirm with professional staff that all new team members have completed onboarding process and required trainings prior to assigning work
    • Work with advisers to ensure cohort payroll is on time and accurate
  • Delegate
    • Ultimately responsible for all aspects of cohort, including all duties delegated to staff in their position descriptions
  • Policies and Procedures
    • Follow all OMN policies and procedures and hold all staff and volunteers to all OMN policies and procedures
    • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities and equipment
    • Be good stewards of OMN resources by ensuring that OMN equipment is only used for OMN work
    • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment
    • Proactively collaborate with adviser on anticipating and resolving issues with student staff, productions, participants, guests, readers, listeners, and viewers
